Specifically, if the subject of the contest is even colorably related to something you've already written or are planning to write, submit it. The worst thing that happens is you don't win. But you might get a prize!

I can’t recommend this enough. If you like to write, there are so many scholarships/competitions for law students to get some $$$. As a 2L I won 2k for a 1k word essay. Most people don’t hear about them, and even fewer actually enter, so please shoot your shot with them!

An observation: Email 'out-of-office' auto-replies are often more annoying than helpful. At the very least, pick one that knows not to respond to every email in a chain.

A guy who’d been homeless completed a program that helped him find a job, and he told me he’d hung the certificate on his wall “Like I’m sure you did with your high school diploma.” And it got me thinking about how this kind of “I don’t care about my diploma” flex looks to others
