It is a scandal that for the last 75 years we have had a fantastic National Health Service but not a viable National Social Care Service.
At last we have a government that is trying to address this anomoly - by destroying the NHS.

Public satisfaction with is at an all-time low, a deliberate political policy to push people into the arms of private healthcare. In fact, NHS activity & productivity is pretty good, given the resources it has. But it simply doesn’t have the resources to keep up with demand.

The vultures are circling. This in prime position on Btoad Street in Birmingham. Not cheap so they must expect a high conversion rate for the few junior docs who see it.

In 2010, 70% of you were satisfied with the NHS.

Now, only 24% are.

14 years of Tory government understaffing, underfunding & private sector outsourcing have trashed the NHS into a travesty of the service we want to give you.

It is heartbreaking & so disgustingly wrong πŸ˜”

my bit for The BMJ this week
I have avoided commenting on RCP business since i was last an officer in 2019 but recent developments show embarrassing ineptitude and tone-deafness

Dear πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§,

This is the anatomy of a militant takeover of your public healthcare system:

- Take the #1 healthcare system on Earth
- Defund it by Β£320 billion over a decade
- Force doctors and nurses to leave country
- Engineer the longest waitlist in NHS history
- Hold patients…

In January 2011, just 17 people waiting longer than 12 hours on a trolley for an emergency hospital bed.

In January 2024, more than 50,000 people did.

Please RT so everyone can be aware of the damage the Conservatives have done to our NHS.

For those who advocate privatising the NHS in order to improve it - proper science from Oxford University published in the Lancet suggests you are wrong.

Such an important and welcome post. As senior doctors we have a critical role here & hence my disappointment last Wednesday when I see some not defending our trainee colleagues on strike because of conditions as much as terms. Thanks Bethan & colleagues.

Not so long ago, the government was promising that rises in National Insurance would be used to fix social care. So what will more cuts in National Insurance due to social care? It doesn’t look remotely fixed to me. What happened to that manifesto promise?

So sales of private health insurance at Aviva have risen by 41% in the last year.

Exactly as the govt intended.

Welcome to your 2-tier health service.

Private for those who can afford it & an underfunded, understaffed, degraded NHS for everyone else.

Isabel Oakeshott The NHS saved my life. If people think it's not good enough, it should be better funded and staff better paid so that the NHS can recruit and retain staff. The NHS is being attacked by those who want to privatise it = taking money away from care into shareholders' pockets.

New data form @ukhsa shows continued increase in pertussis (whooping cough) infections, with 553 confirmed in England in Jan, compared with 858 cases for the whole of last year (2023).
And this is official figure - real number could be 10x higher.

OMG I would hate to work in a system where your patients are over a barrel (before, during & especially after the biopsy Β£$€).

I guess one gets used to the unethical quagmire. Anyway this is why we fight for some form of an NHS as the primary way to healthcare.
