Has anybody tried giving burnout lectures to the healthcare system decision makers about how to cause less burnout rather than lecturing the burnt out on how to be less burnt out

one time in med school I cried after one of my patients died

I felt embarrassed for crying and ashamed for showing emotion…until I saw that my attending was crying too.

it’s ok to have feelings in medicine

I’m convinced we can be equally exhausted by our work & fulfilled by it.

We can love a job that makes us weary. It doesn’t mean it’s the wrong fit or the wrong work. It’s a reminder that we need space and time to unwind, decompress, and restore ourselves.

Explaining the trauma we experience to our family is challenging

Trying to explain how we’re able to see traumatic things without it ruining us is more challenging

I’ve learned that while I need that skill to do my job, I also need to process trauma to be human.

Many of us are the first doctors in our family, from our neighborhoods, from our communities.

We know it was hard to get here.

Now, if one can, let’s make sure we give back. Help out those who have the heart and brain for medicine, but not the guidance.

Invest in people ❤️

If 24 hour shifts are so great, how come we don’t ask that of nurses too? pilots? heavy machinery operators? truckers? air traffic controllers?

I respect that some people have a personal preference and that many provide good care despite exhaustion. But. We can dream bigger.

Rest Well Dr Nakita Mortimer 😔

Residency programs across the country need systemic and institutional overhauls. Residents (we) are struggling.

We lost another bright light too soon.

You should be able to easily sue insurance companies for denial of treatments/services, especially if it results in a negative outcome. Especially on PAs for chronic meds.

We give everything to our patients, hospitals, profession with little consideration returned to us. The conditions we work under are harmful, dangerous. It terrifies me to think about my own family being cared for by exhausted residents, knowing personally what that entails.

🎄 David James Henry ❄️ US trainee docs are arguably one of the most exploited groups of workers. I was paid less than $20/hr for literally doing life saving surgeries & care in a hospital system so fragile our trainees could not even spare residents for 24 hrs to go on retreat bc system relied on them.

Medicine owes you nothing. Do not plan your life around medicine. I know it t doesn’t feel like a choice in the states, but you’re in charge of your life.

And you have the option to stand up for those trainees.
