I've seen renewed talk of a connection between solar activity and earthquakes, but no such connection is known to exist. Major earthquakes happen all the time without solar flares, and solar flares happen all the time without major quakes. Here's all M7+ in the last 4 years:

Using Twitter to search for news from Japan gives you hundreds of blue check accounts with very few followers posting video and images from 2011 and claiming it's today. $44 billion to make the world's most important news source absolutely useless

There’s a .000008% chance of impact by 2007 FT3 on 3 October 2024, which comes to about 11 million to 1 odds. No cause for concern. (It’s also less than half a km wide, as opposed to the 10 km dino bomb.)

The New Years Day M7.5 in Japan caused strong shaking for many people, but because of strong, enforced building codes in Japan, the damage is much less than it could have been. The people on the Noto peninsula will have been hit the hardest. This thread explains more

Today’s M7.5 earthquake in Japan was located at or near the site of a recent intense seismic swarm and transient deformation at Noto Peninsula, which is a non-volcanic/geothermal area far from major plate boundaries.

I will die on the hill that punctuation that is part of the sentence containing the quote not the quote itself should go outside the quotation marks.

I know this is against every style guide in the world, but I will be the change I want to see in the world god damnit

Although there’s no good place to have a major quake, Japan is better prepared than almost anywhere: buildings are often made to withstand potent temblors, the public are informed (and experienced), and the emergency services are knowledgable and on the ball.

Man I gotta say, I’m sure other people are getting something out of this but all my direct contact with AI has been so depressing.
For example, I used to be part of a bunch of crochet groups and boards on social media and I’ve quit them all because now they are 90 percent

Dr. Matthew M. Wielicki Not according to the source of the data. There are studies to back this stuff up. Pushing back against that requires more than a graph, tweet, and ignorance.

But this is where you become silent on climate change.
