- The front of a Roman sarcophagus decorated with the Labours of Hercules: ca. Late 2nd Century AD. I like how Hercules is shown ageing over the period of the completion of his tasks.

Going through some photos from years past, and this pic is making me jones for some time in again. My visit in December was chilly (but worth it - wonderful meal and conversation with Dr Crom!), but May in Oxford is all about flowers, fields, and warm days.

A left hand holding drapery was found with the head, indicating that both pieces came from a larger-than-life sized statue. A torso was supposedly found, but disappeared. 2/

Simple *and* complex. This Late Bronze Age (bronze) shield from Wales is decorated with alternating concentric rows of ribs and small bosses. The central conical boss gives additional dimension to this parade shield.

12th-10th c. BCE
