Stela of retiarius Skyrtos ' the Dacian', a free man who became a gladiator and won six fights before his fatal defeat.
You can see it until April 21st at the Baths of Diocletian for the Dacia exhibition.

#MosaicMonday portraits of two of the four chariot team faction leaders (aurigae) from a larger mosaic. White and blue, each with their lead horses. They wear leggings, long sleeves (decorated!) w/ fasciae (ropes tied around their torso).

A left hand holding drapery was found with the head, indicating that both pieces came from a larger-than-life sized statue. A torso was supposedly found, but disappeared. 2/

Simple *and* complex. This Late Bronze Age (bronze) shield from Wales is decorated with alternating concentric rows of ribs and small bosses. The central conical boss gives additional dimension to this parade shield.

For #SpoliaSunday we're off to the MAF_Firenze to admire this upcycled ancient #bronze statue of a lamp-bearer, found in #Pesaro in the lands of the #dellaRovere duchy of #Urbino and sent to #Florence as a wedding gift from the duke to his heiress in 1630.
