If I wanted people to change their beliefs about an issue I cared about, and they invited me to a dinner at their home, I would use the occasion to try to persuade them with polite conversation, rather than protesting in a way that angered and alienated them.

I don’t think it’s a ton of people. I think most academics clearly care about the standards of their professions. But I’m seeing more and more where obvious academic misconduct is being excused, brushed off as not a big deal, because the guilty party has the right opinions.

A lot of academics are so rotted by blue cable news they no longer care about scholarship. Claudine Gay flagrantly plagiarized, but it doesn’t matter because she’s Team Justice. A book misuses research and misidentifies rural places, but it’s ok because it attacks The Bad People.
