In Thunderball Ian Fleming based the character of villain Count Lippe on prince Bernhard zur Lippe-Biesterfeld, husband of Dutch Queen Juliana. Fleming (NID) knew Bernhard because he had to screen him in 1940. During their luncheons Bernhard would order shaken vodka martini’s!

Originally called the fortress of Count Lippe, because it was the Englishman Guillermo de Schaumburg-Lippe who reorganized the Portuguese army, and who ordered it to be raised in 1763 when he saw the strategic importance of the area.

I'm a big fan of Bond causing mischief at Shrublands. So many great moments to appreciate, especially when he exacts revenge on Count Lippe. Sean Connery just seems to be having fun throughout Thunderball and it's one of the reasons it's my favourite of his films.

It might even shrink you back to size.”

Last day at Shrublands.
Still no sign of Count Lippe, maybe next time!

Here’s a question, both films THUNDERBALL and NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN feature 007 taking a trip to Shrublands health farm, but the question is, which version would you rather be stay at?

I vote for THUNDERBALL, just to mess with Count Lippe!

Swinemünde Bridge which was used as the border crossing in Berlin where the funeral cortège crosses to the west in a film whose name eludes me right now.

I think Michael Caine and the bloke who played Count Lippe were in it.

Today I chanced across a Vulcan bomber and a thermonuclear device — which, as you recall, are the key plot points of Thunderball. Have started to refer to myself as Count Lippe, knowing I shall come to a bad end.
