I've also heard from principals that the focus on the 90% threshold can create some strange attendance incentives for schools, ie focusing more resources on the kid with 85% attendance who can be nudged over the line than the one with 60% attendance.

We asked NYC high schoolers what they think of the campus protests + response, + how it’s affecting their college plans.

I rarely look at comments but if you do on the NYT story on admissions today you will see higher ed even lost the monied, degreed class. They even think higher ed is a scam now. That's not good for most colleges. Something needs to change--and fast.

Among my other concerns with employer-sponsored child care, I think many people assume it is free or very low-cost for employees. Here we have Walmart HQ charging families nearly **$15,000** a year.

'The price is $1,117 to $1,258 per child per month.'

Without child care, Derrika Richard couldn't work; and without work, she couldn't afford child care. It felt like an unsolvable problem until last fall, when she was accepted into a New Orleans tax-funded program that pays for child care seats:

Thrilled to be honored by Headliner Awards for magazine writing for a The Hechinger Report story that was near to my heart for over a year, and examined what many consider the racist and classist underpinnings of how schools diagnose learning disabilities: headlinerawards.org/2024-print-pho…

I'm at UT Dallas covering a sit-in in the administration building, where the president's office is located. I overheard campus police say they'll lock doors at 10pm. Students say they will stay until their demands are met. This is a developing story:

My Columbia Journalism students are out reporting non-stop: working sources they've built over months, navigating the campus unlike any outsider, and adding much-needed context, humanity and depth to coverage.
