The lab leak discourse has probably already succeeded in cancelling Deep VZN.

An absurdly dangerous project where they would go and seek out the viruses most able to cause pandemics in humans.

This alone makes it a debate that has achieved more than most others.

What a weird way to say “about $7 of electricity over an entire year”. The taboo on frank disclosure of energy prices is one of the strangest features of modern media

California public pension money is the lifeblood of the economy in this small-government, Republican boomtown. It’s a phenomenon happening across the West, as many career civil servants decide California is no longer their home.

Brian EdwardsTiekert Mallrat Chris Elmendorf SF's minimum wage laws are absolutely not why SF has a higher median income and it's kind of disgusting to suggest that. SF prices out low income people with its housing market.

This isn't a House appointment projection map, this is a home construction map, and it's devastating for Democrats in our most progressive places that they're inaccessible.

U.S. Right To Know Ralph Baric noted that an earlier version of Defuse proposed handling novel live SARS-like viruses at low biosafety and wrote:
'In the US, these recombinant SARS-CoV are studied under BSL3... In china, might be growin these virus under bsl2. US reseachers will likely freak out'

Wealthy homeowners upset about mixed-income housing near Metro rail stations are a reliable source of work for the CEQA plaintiffs bar. Much more so than renters in SW Fresno.

Simply put, AB 1633 is a threat to their business model.

'When I arrived in San Francisco in 1981, there were almost no homeless people'
I have no idea why Tim Redmond would say this. There werent as many encampments and a lot more SROs/motels, but there were somewhere around 10,000 homeless in SF in 1981. 48hills.org/2023/12/why-is…

PASystem 🇵🇸 Preston also voted to block housing on Washington St based on a bullshit argument about soil when the CEQA appellant admitted they were upset the project would block their view and would drop the appeal if the developer preserved their view. No one in SF is acting in good faith.

veiller, in the 1913 'Proceedings of the National Housing Association'

the question is, 'how can we keep apartment houses and tenement houses and flats out of our city?'

'the easiest and quickest way to penalize the apartment house is... through the fireproofing requirements.'

It turns out that the major pharmacies in the U.S. routinely provide patient medical records to law enforcement without a warrant. The potential ramifications of this for anyone on birth control, medication for mental illness or other personal conditions are staggering.

Unknown to me until Ben Blatt pointed it out: Nearly all of the rise in pedestrian fatalities in the U.S. since 2009 has come *at night*.

Extraordinary findings here.
Even with fertility rates at an all-time low (and far below replacement the US and every developed country) a huge still share thinks declining fertility is a good thing!
'The Population Bomb' (55 years ago) is still where our heads are at.🧵

I regret to inform you that the predictably evil people are being predictably evil again. The FDA is trying to pre-emptively ban hundreds of tests ... for fear of the side-effects of information? If any of you can stop this overt tyranny it would be greatly appreciated.

It's actually impressive how Contra Costa County is uniting both pro-transit and anti-transit folks against this proposal.
