The data says:

More than 80% of workers who have used a hybrid model want to keep it.

This is the that we must design for, cultivate, and support.

A4: I'll take the bold position that sprawl is an inevitable outcome of choice, huge app supply + the rise of (which is also mostly SaaS.)

CIOs must build a robust capability to manage it.

And a proactive program to bring in from the cold.

Joanne Friedman Jim Russell Myles Suer Yes, that's the issue: Unless block everything at the firewall -- causing many other issues and forcing people onto their own devices -- then security is a nearly intractable problem.

Like insider threats, the one vector you can't stamp out.

A3: In general, the more complexity you have, the more inefficiency lurks in its shadow.

So yes, overprovisioning is a cost impact of sprawl.

Costs are higher also in:

- Support/help desk
- Data backup/integration/retention
- Governance
-
- Cyber (H/T Jim)

Jim Russell Joanne Friedman Myles Suer Yes, good catch. Although almost all enterprises have lengthy security reviews for these days.

Unfortunately, this process is usually skipped entirely in the case of departmental or .

Myles Suer A1: sprawl has gotten considerably worse over the last few years after fairly manageable growth (see graph of the latest data I can find.)

2020 was the tipping point.

Yes, is a major cause. So is migration as legacy systems finally age out.

Rodrigo Gazzaneo +100. I'm also much more cloud . Making it possible for a lot of new ERP vendors to emerge.

Firms that M&A a lot are starting to accumulate a much higher rate of differentiated ERP apps now.

A I recently spoke to had 33 ERPs systems. A new high water mark.

A2: The major impacts of sprawl, YMMV:

The bad:

- Matching data sprawl
- Poor integration with many IT systems
- Loss of control/SLAs
-
- Harder to support (given many more vendor relationships)

The good:

- Business moves faster
- More needs met

Rodrigo Gazzaneo I also find can be an important for internal app competition, forcing when it wouldn't otherwise happen with .

It also causes app fragmentation, such as when each sales group has their own favorite .

Choice is here. It's about managing.

Rodrigo Gazzaneo I agree , if adopted with a strategy, often the best way to adopt into modern apps.

But the risk is losing control of data, app fragmentation poor integration with other business systems, and not even knowing who is using what.

Must be managed well.

Perhaps not, but make no mistake, most workers will use of their own sourcing if not provided. The value is there.
