.Doug Parr 'the UK focus on nuclear power is now an obstacle to delivering net zero because it is sucking up time, energy and political bandwidth, which can be spent on more useful things.”

Says Greenpeace UK's Doug Parr: “ power can’t bridge the gap between anything and anything. It is too slow. It is too expensive. It is a massive distraction.”

Another day, another comment piece in the Telegraph that:

a) has a pop at EVs

b) says stuff about EVs that is pretty misleading

This one, by Ross Clark, also says some fairly misleading things about road pricing

So here's a thread to correct the narrative - buckle up!

More evidence, this time from an investment analyst, that UK lack of progress on buildings and transport now means it's becoming a laggard in the climate fight

The Govt line of 'we've done more than others so lets slow down' just doesn't stack up

I’m bored of saying it but just remember all this is with the temperature rise of just over one degree when we’re heading towards 3°. And we won’t get net 0 until 2050. Racing towards the cliff.

Flooding will substantially damage UK harvest in 2024 after the wettest 18 months on record, driven by warm temps locally & globally

This should (but likely won't) be a good corrective to the bunch who think 'we can just adapt' to climate change

G20 nations put $142bn into fossil fuel expansion in poor countries

Compare w $104bn for clean energy developments

“While rich countries claim they can’t afford [finance for clean energy transition], they've no shortage of public funds for fossil fuels'

The idea that a new £11mn fund will do anything but lightly scratch the surface of the problem of sewage discharges is for the birds, although that is clearly UK govt body language

It's going to cost many £10s of billions to sort this problem out

“The way to save our NHS is to tax the super-rich & big polluters, as well as investing in green technology which is the biggest & best opportunity to grow our flailing economy. This would raise bns to save our NHS, ease cost of living, & help the climate” theguardian.com/politics/2024/…

Destruction of a precious ancient bluebell woodland in the Kent countryside under a deluge of illegal landfill waste shows the utter failure of environmental law, complete inaction by the authorities & increasing lawlessness in the UK. Let me tell you the story of Hoads Wood 🧵
