Important thread. Until recently I faced the prospect of redundancy every year (thanks to precarious contracts based on student numbers) and overpaying on the mortgage and having six months' worth of expenses saved up were my lifelines.

This is causing lots of upset, and rightly so. As a child my special interest was books. If people had tried to 'reduce its dominance' in my life, I wouldn't now have a doctorate and a career in Classics - and I would have been desperately unhappy.
