This bears out the uncomfortable trends in our society and is an important metric for a reason. Undermining public health, sex education and primary healthcare and public education in general leads to poor health outcomes. Increasing childhood mortality is next.

I have a dear friend who is French and shows up from time to time and loves to ski. He’s a ultramarathoner who’s wired like me except in one way, when I ski, I never stop to drink or eat. This disturbs him immensely, so today I acquiesced. He felt the event needed to be recorded.

There are moments in life where we see the overarching meaning of it all. Call it epiphany or catharsis, it is always tempered by the immutable truth that we can only tolerate the absolute truth for a heart beat. For when we speak of it, cotton fills our mouths and it slips away.

I am a physician married to a physician who completely agrees with this. I will pay my taxes and plant trees so that those who follow me can learn under the shade of a spreading elm, and not fear the unfortunate fate of becoming ill.
