So exciting! Had confirmation that this little beauty is the Glistening Waxcap, Gloioxanthomyces vitellinus. Classed as Endangered on the ICUN Red List, it is another very nice find for Allerton Cemetery bringing the total Waxcap species to 16.

Today seems like a good day for a ghost story...

The first Ghost Orchid to be recorded in Britain was found in July 1854 by Mrs Anderton Smith in Herefordshire. Not recognising it, she picked it, and it was sent away to be identified. (1/12)

Good morning! A new week dawns and with it a new featured tour - Butterflies of Tenerife. This island is a hotbed of butterfly endemism, and we expect to encounter some pioneer African & American species too. Filling fast, just 2 places left on this tour!

Not sure there’s a finer bird to pass through Shetland in autumn, Hornemann’s Arctic Redpoll. Pretty much annual rarity from Arctic Greenland, this absolute unit of a finch is comp in size to House Sparrow cf Lesser, closer to Siskin in size. A bird of true presence.
Unst lst wk

It has been a brilliant autumn for irruptive species in Shetland. Exceptional numbers of continental Coal Tits and Treecreepers (these two, and Firecrest, were Shetland find ticks for me this year); also lots of Waxwings and, loveliest of all, Northern Bullfinches Nature in Shetland

Some say you should always have the sun behind you when taking📷 but sometimes side lit subjects can look pretty. Loved how the sunlight made the water droplets in the background glow around this beautiful Dunnock yesterday!💚✨

The rugby world's attention turns to Paris today for the Rugby World Cup Final - will the All Blacks be able to match the physicality of the Springboks?

One French resident knows a thing or two about hard-fought duels - Two-tailed Pasha are ferociously territorial... (1/5)

Quite the arrival of 'Northern' Bullfinch into the Northern Isles today. At least four were Fair Isle Bird Obs, including these two dapper males in Boini Mire

Good evening. Beautiful Amethyst Deceivers are popping up all over the woodland floor now after the recent rain... thought these two looked like a nice couple! 💜 🍄 photography

Euonymus europaeus, Spindle; invert associates
I've used Spindle in every copse & hedgerow I’ve ever planted. Fruits ripening now; red-pink capsules enclose orange arils. It’s used as larval host by c. 27 spp. of inverts, 9 of them Lepidoptera.
Thomé, Flora von Deutschland, PD

While butterflies are the main focus of this week's featured tour, Spring Butterflies of the French Pyrenees (29 May - 5 June 2024), you'll be tripping over orchids daily too. And maybe a pollinator or two...

This fishbox, complete with Arabic text, was a cracking find on Skaill beach today. Found the first of these here 4 years ago, now seeing a few each year. Mostly Moroccan, it's crossed the Atlantic twice; westbound first on the Canaries Current, then Gulf Stream to here 🤯👍

At this time of year it is not unusual to see interesting birds as storms and autumn bird migrations bring many species to the islands .
It is a little more unusual to see them in the kitchen
