Writing about Rothko this morning and this explains it all:
“I would like to say to those who think of my pictures as serene … that I have imprisoned the most utter violence in every inch of their surface.”

Tbilisi paralysed by protests against a Kremlin-inspired law that will undermine West-backed NGOs etc. >> What does the pro-Russia Georgian Dream gov do now? Double down or relent? Georgia is at a critical juncture, part of the widening West v autocracy conflict.

It's World Press Freedom Day. And nobody deserves our respect, solidarity and admiration today more than the brave and determined journalists of Gaza. We would be blind without them and they are the best of us.

There are many outstanding things to eat in Georgia but more ought to be said about the tiny potatoes that are on menus come May. Served with green tkemali, sour plum sauce, and dill… I dream of these. Wish I was there.

I walked past a closed bookshop the other night and could see Cold Kitchen on display through the window. And it struck me: there was Darwin, in there, on the cover and in the shop. Now, he is in other people's hands, finding new fans, and will live on forever in the pages.
