I was busy while on vacation. Yesterday, in conjunction with AuthorsAgainstBookBans, Elana K. Arnold MariNaomi (they/them) Molly Knox Ostertag, maggie tokuda-hall (updates only) and I joined Huntington Beach council members to speak out again a recently passed ordinance aiming to restrict access to certain children’s books.
Cool stance to take for an organization that *checks notes* defends free speech?
PEN America it feels so pointed that this comes in the wake of staff/authors/the general public demanding you do better re: the genocide in Palestine.
Your employees deserve better.
While the CA state legislature took action with AB1078 last session to help ensure that school
districts could not reject textbooks or school library books for discriminatory reasons, the passage of
Ordinance 4318 shows that book bans are still alive and well in CA. -MariNaomi (they/them)
Authors Against Book Bans condemns Huntington Beach City Ordinance No. 4318, which takes away
the public's freedom to read, and unjustly targets LGBTQ books for removal.
Our CA members will fight this. Here's a letter from Dashka Slater:
