‘From Wigan to Westminster’
A great privilege to be in last night for the launch of Sir Patrick Duffy’s second book, written to celebrate his 103rd birthday.
His speech was as spirited as ever!

Final plug for this one which was published earlier in the week. My article on Mabel FitzGerald -an Irish language enthusiast, CnB member and Easter Rising participant. She married Desmond FitzGerald who would become a FS gov minister. RTs welcome. Thanks!

Just met a Galway man on a Teams call for work, completely by surprise. Always good to hear a familiar accent and talk about home!

I met Jayne many years ago on a Leeds Labour doorknocking session. She was friendly, kind & enthusiastic. One of the most dedicated party activists l ever came across. Condolences to her friends and family. May she rest in peace ❤

Have to say l agree with this. Quite nice on the inside but a pretty awful carbuncle on the outside.

I’m giving a public talk about bins! And not just one bin. Oh no, it’s a history of Leeds in five bins - from the Victorian ash pit to these wheelies.

It’s on 11 April at 1pm at Leeds Central Library. You can book using the link here:

Thank you Dr Ciaran McCabe for a thoughtful and positive review of my book on the O'Conor Don for Irish Historical Studies. The snippet below neatly sums up a lot of what I was trying to say/argue about the complex identity of Irish Catholic unionists.

That's two weeks of my Durham Residential Research Library fellowship done. I've struggled with being away from my wife & kids, but being in the archives, thinking & writing, and meeting new people was great. Durham is lovely & the people are friendly. Looking forward to my next two weeks in May.

Join us in Leeds in July for the annual CRS conference! A friendly, supportive environment to present research and network with scholars working on the history of Catholicism. ECRs and PhD students especially encouraged, with bursaries available to support.
