''Scarlet Street' (1945) was originally banned in New York State. The ban was removed only after prolonged representation. It is apparently immoral to stab a woman seven times, but moral to stab her only four times.”

'Jean-Luc Godard's 'Le mépris' (1963) has amazing acting, is very free & loosely edited, & is a wonderful movie about filmmaking. For me, having Fritz Lang in there is just unbelievable to watch. To see this man play a fictional director is incredible.'

'For something ostensibly so foreign to me, how Ozu's 'Tokyo Story' (1953) depicts the life of a family was extremely familiar. It’s so close to a reality that I know. it happens sometimes: you see things through other people's eyes, & it's so intimate & close'

Alex Gardner.

Portrait of Lewis Payne.
1865.

Barthes felt pierced by the fact that Payne was executed just over two months after this photograph was taken.
The horror of knowing “he is going to die” is the punctum.

The “historical interest” is the studium.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968, Kubrick)

“The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good.”

L'envol 🪶
Le motif de l’oiseau occupe Constantin Brancusi pendant trois décennies. L’envol symbolise pour l'artiste le rêve de l’homme échappant à sa condition terrestre, son ascension vers le spirituel. 👉bit.ly/Expo_Brancusi
