This newly-identified fault in Saanich is a sobering reminder of seismic risk: 'a single large earthquake, of magnitude 6.1–7.6, likely occurred on the XELF between ∼4,700 and 2,300 years ago. A similar future earthquake... could cause major damage to the Greater Victoria area.'

Thanks to the huge effort from our team that conducted this newly published study on the newly recognized XEOLXELEK-Elk Lake fault, crossing the peninsula north of BC. Our study suggests this fault hosted a M 6.1–7.6 Holocene earthquake. See thread for more.

How does fault zone geology control frictional mechanics and hazard? We have a PhD studentship at University of Bristol Earth Sciences with ***guaranteed funding*** from NERC COMET and British Geological Survey to look into this by using a unique combo of geology and geophysics.

Get in touch for more info!

Yesterday's M4.3 earthquake deep beneath the Puget sound was widely felt here in Victoria BC and beautifully recorded by the SchoolShake network. Here is the seismogram from Glenlyon Norfolk School showing very clear P and S wave arrivals
