This game is so sweet and interesting! It packs a lot of curiosity and gentle feels into a short exploratory play session. If you have a spare ~10 mins, give it a spin.

β€œSome of the weirdest skulls are found in frogs that eat birds and mammals, use their heads as a shield, or in a few rare cases, are venomous,” said Daniel J Paluh.

in contrast, this morning I went from 'huh I think this needs a regex' to an ACTUAL SIMPLE REGEX THAT DOES WHAT IT NEEDS TO in like 5 minutes, please clap

(different project, the answer to the previous one was definitely still 'don't do it')

One of the hardest things to grapple with becoming disabled is coming to terms with how often you need to ask for help. Between your own internalised ableism, hating yourself for needing to ask, and your fear of external ableism, that others will resent you for 'burdening' them.

when i was a young engineer i was scolded for thinking 'tech-first'

feels like AI hype has gone a little too far in that direction recently. agents / LLMs should be implementation details in a good product, rather than the headline

dont forget what problem you want to solve!

πŸ˜‚ have used all of these (except threatening!) this week to get JSON, more specific schemas, bools... layering them works pretty well tbh, especially if you can build some slightly flexible thinking into the parsing.

I've seen people worrying: Will ChatGPT, GPT-4, etc destroy human originality?!

I think that's the wrong question. But! It does make sense to worry that these AI models will homogenize our lives and flatten our reality. A thread 🧡

4) They talk about 'the AI' as if it's ... one thing.

There are proven machine learning techniques that do many tasks more cheaply, accurately, and often with interpretability.

You want the simplest possible thing that will suffice. Not AI for the sake of AI.

My PhD was on the evolution of horse feet.

Now, I write platform and ML code for a collaborative narrative roleplaying game. (And have ENTHUSIASTIC opinions about horses and evolution whenever they come up πŸ˜‡)

Much of my programming life is a pendulum between 'should I stop optimizing and just write the damn hacky code' vs. 'should I stop doing this the hacky brittle way and make it more general and stable'

Just found these stunning 'ghost fingers' -- i.e., the digitizer's hand has been auto-corrected out of existence by Google. But the erasure has been done in a way that
a) doesn't quite work and
b) is actually very beautiful
