I wrote this back in early November and I do still feel that part of what's missing from this is an appreciation that students are at university to learn (including to learn how to argue, protest, debate, push back) 1/2 slate.com/news-and-polit…

I have been conducting research about the 1968 Columbia protests for such a long time, but I honestly do not know what to say right now. Except, perhaps, that student movements have been one of the most progressive, courageous political avantgardes of the past century

You can’t call the cops on non-violent students to have them violently arrested and call yourself a fucking educator.

First USC, now Columbia—and it’s not even Friday. Major universities this week reminding pesky students that they are mostly corporations, with students as an inconvenient afterthought that can be dealt with through a range of repressive measures from censorship to policing.

Deploying militarized police on your own students in the name of student safety. What more is there to say really?

I am automatically distrustful of any faculty member who condemns a student—or, worse, sets the carceral state against them—for non-violent civic engagement.

Arresting legal observers now seems to be standard fare at protests and it seems like they’re just getting away with it?

Earlier today, Columbia University called in the NYPD to clear a student encampment from the East Lawn and arrest the students, but other students have now set up a new encampment on the opposite lawn and linked hands around it. In the background is Butler Library.

Grateful to one of my wonderful students for creating and sharing her art piece, Mending Palestine, with the community. A powerful, piercing, and, ultimately, hopeful depiction of what’s going on.

If I were an Ivy League president I would simply not sic riot police on scores of nonviolent student protesters in a bid to impress Elise Stefanik. Elise Stefanik will never be impressed. Have some dignity.

'Socialist Sound Worlds' is live in Slavic Review! Check out Matt Kendall's essay on reading noise into social encounters, Andrea Bohlman's about the intimacy of sound postcards, or mine on remastering and resurrecting Lenin through recording practices. cambridge.org/core/journals/…
