'Under pressure from the right, Netanyahu is preparing a case for continuing the war despite US demands. The White House is confident that it has the means to pressure Israel... but Netanyahu is preoccupied with domestic politics in an effort to survive.' haaretz.com/israel-news/20…

The idea that you can 'reactivate' thousands of idle PA security personnel, after nearly two decades, and have them take over security in a ruined Gaza—this sounds less like viable policy and more like the premise of an awful buddy-cop movie axios.com/2023/12/17/us-…

'According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, 64 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza since the war between Israel and Hamas began, more than in any other similar period of time since the group started collecting data in 1992.' nytimes.com/2023/12/15/wor…

'The question will soon arise about whether to expand the operation to Rafah... Egypt harbors two fears: battles in Rafah that will spread into its territory, and an Israeli attempt to push hundreds of thousands of refugees from Gaza into Sinai.' haaretz.com/israel-news/20…

Our latest satellite analysis finds that almost 43,000 buildings in Gaza (16% of the total) have been damaged and that at least 450,000 people (~20% of the population) are now homeless. And the real numbers are almost certainly higher. economist.com/interactive/br…

'Almost half of the munitions Israel has used in Gaza since the war began have been unguided bombs, a US intelligence assessment has found, a ratio that some arms experts say helps explain the conflict's enormous civilian death toll.' washingtonpost.com/national-secur…

Good observations from Dahlia Scheindlin on the latest poll of Palestinian public opinion, particularly this one. For years there has been a gap between the West Bank and Gaza in their support for Hamas, and over the past two months that gap has grown into a chasm haaretz.com/israel-news/ha…

This has been official Israeli policy for many years, it's just not often stated so bluntly by officials (in English). Instead of pushing them endlessly to endorse a two-state solution, ask them to describe the one-state outcome they support

'The tradition of extended families living together in multistory buildings, compounded by relatives moving in together for safety in wartime, has meant that hundreds of multigenerational families have suffered the same fate, all but wiped out in strikes.' ft.com/content/c09cc4…

'Maybe it's too late for Netanyahu this time. Israelis have finally had enough of him. But he's going to try to cling to power anyway, divide the country at a time of war and jeopardize Israel's strategic alliance with the United States in the process.' haaretz.com/israel-news/20…

Israeli politicians are making promises about the Gaza war that the Israeli army can't keep: 'The excited talk in the TV studios about the defeat of Hamas is premature... there is no convincing evidence yet of its imminent collapse.' haaretz.com/israel-news/20…
