Has been a while since I've posted a sand photomicrograph, but I recently took this image of a quartzofeldspathic sand from the Merced River of California. Horizontal field of view is ~5 mm.

Anyone know of a paper that estimates sediment residence times from erosion to deposition in a sedimentary basin? For example, how long does it take for a grain of sand to be eroded from the Andes and deposited in the Amazon Fan?

Sadly I have never had students do such an exercise - sounds great though. Could be done in relatively few lines of code (load data, create function for KDE and/or PDP, loop through ages and make distribution, plot distribution)
