One does have to wonder about the popularity of tariffs, which put upward pressure on the price of goods they are applied to and also shield domestic industry, in an economy where unemployment is low and people are unhappy about prices.

For some reason the “cluster munitions are illegal” crowd are silent about me using them in urban areas 100s of miles from the front line…..

Politically, campus protests are gift to Trump 2024. This is performative politics unlikely to achieve any meaningful policy goals.

It's apparently been memory-holed that Lyndon Johnson responded to the riots of the Hot Summer of 1967 by forming the Kerner Commission and asking congress for legislation to address 'root causes.' He didn't scream and yell for cops to crack heads. -OS

A few quick words on this:

Critics of Manhattan DA Bragg's case have long questioned whether the alleged 2016 election-related conspiracy was a crime.

The first week of trial revealed that Trump's accused co-conspirators feared criminal prosecution, as it happened.

Just to review, a few things that are not free speech:

Blocking Jewish students from getting into places for all on campus

Physically grabbing and removing other students who disagree with you from public spaces

Cannot emphasize enough that Trump does not have any ideas to reduce inflation.

This is just a very poorly designed tax on middle- and working-class people.

Northern police departments have so far acted with both more restraint and have rhetorically characterized the protesters as peaceful. The south is a different ballgame, as we’ve seen at Texas and Emory. The worst could easily happen. I truly have no clue what they’re thinking.

College presidents don’t seem to grasp how easily things could go sideways, and what will happen if a student is shot. We all saw that Atlanta cop manhandling an older professor and screaming at her that she’s a fascist. They’ve been primed to think these protests are dangerous.

I don’t say this lightly. I think we exist in a culture of fear that cultivates an unreasonable paranoia about worst case scenarios. But it does seem to me that we are careening to a point where we are going to be lucky to get through graduation season without a Kent State.
