in 1882, Charles Stewart Parnell was released from Kilmainham Gaol following the so-called ‘Kilmainham Treaty’. The British government promised to alleviate rent arrears in Ireland and Parnell denounced political violence, winning him much support.

Today marks the start of summer in Ireland (at least on paper!)
