#OnThisDay in 1847, Daniel OâConnell, âthe Liberatorâ, died in Genoa, Italy. OâConnell, most famous for leading the Catholic Emancipation movement in the 1820s, dedicated his life to political and social activism not only for Ireland, but for the world.

Yesterday in 1916, Sean MacDiarmada and James Connolly were executed. The last of the rebel leaders to be executed, their deaths galvanised public opinion against the British government and enabled revolutionary sentiment to grow.
