It’s clear that false information plays a role in global events, from divisive elections to the COVID-19 pandemic to the conflict roiling Israel and Gaza.

It's important to counter false claims and false narratives. Research shows clarity on how to do it.

For scholars to say whether 'factchecking works' we need to recognise this is part of what really effective factchecking organisations do.

Publishing factchecks that correct falsehoods is necessary but not sufficient. This work campaigning for structural change is vital too 👇

ONLINE FIRST AND OPEN ACCESS! Authors Lucas Graves, Valérie Bélair-Gagnon + Rebekah Larsen, PhD find fact-checking operations have moved to “debunking” misinformation. In response, fact-checkers have migrated into a 'public health' model of protecting news audiences.

Some big Wisconsin Watch news. I'm so privileged to have learned from the Halls, who are among the most generous colleagues I've ever had.

That they can comfortably enjoy their retirement is a testament to the strength of the institution they've built.

Hey PBS NewsHour your prerogative of course to have Jonathan Capehart and David Brooks moralizing about how Snowden is no Ellsberg blah blah. But pretty shitty not to acknowledge that Ellsberg himself rejected that view & spoke often and vigorously in support of Snowden's whistleblowing

Lots of buzz downtown today about the prospect of two hotels coming to the old MATC site on Wisconsin/Johnson.
The concern: Hotel staff can no longer afford to live downtown. Same is true for the musicians they say will perform in the public spaces.

New OA article on how 'debunking' viral misinfo has eclipsed political fact-checking, how fact-checkers understand the shift, and how it marks rise of a harm reduction ethic at odds with traditional views of the audience. w/ Valérie Bélair-Gagnon Rebekah Larsen, PhD tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

1. In 2023, conservative activists have advanced the theory that 'woke' corporations are pushing a radical, pro-LGBTQ agenda

But a Popular Information investigation reveals 25 rainbow flag-waiving corporations have donated $13.5 million to anti-gay politicians since Jan 2022
