What, people really believe that Israel under Netanyahu isn't going to respond militarily? Come off it, I like a bit of hope but c'mon. Now where and what they hit is important, but they'll surely act with force in some way.

I'm obviously and forever in the 'de-escalate and negotiate' camp, but take the rights and wrongs out of it and I just don't see why Israel doesn't now go hard against the Iranian nuclear programme. That's an existential risk to their state; further Iranian strikes are not.

The regime in Tehran is as dumb as rocks. They've just displayed how good Israel's defences are while opening themselves up to a major retaliation. The worst of it is they probably think it was a clever and 'calibrated' attack. Here's a pile of rocks they match for dumbness:

M'learned colleague quite correct. If Iran can't hit much, it risks looking absurd rather than decisive. We'll just have to see what's got through (if anything) when the sun comes up.

*Fog of war
*Misinformation
*Sensationalism
*Doomerism
*Overclaim
*Social media loudmouths
Stick to your trusted sources, and remember there's lots only a v few can see going on behind the scenes.

The gap between the *actually existing university* and the one the public, civil servants, Spads and politicians imagine is now so wide as to be unbridgeable. That's one reason I'm not optimistic about a rescue job.

Universities are educational communities. They do not have, and must not have:
*A 'brand' or brands;
*Internal quasi-markets;
*Complex financial engineering;
*Competitive logics;
*Quantitative targets;
*Justification via social capital.
If they do, they are not universities.

By all means, let’s focus on the value of higher education. But let’s not define that value solely in terms of economics. A definition that does not include social value, cultural value or artistic value is no value at all.
