US per capita CO2 emissions now at 1913 levels. In 1913 only 1% of Americans had indoor plumbing and electricity 😮

The fact that Texas has more than 3x the solar capacity coming online this year than California should make us reassess what we consider effective policy here.

Yes, targets and subsidies are important, but so are interconnections and regulatory reform.

A quick tip for anyone making charts and graphs using ChatGPT-4’s code interpreter:

You can ask it to give you a download link to a high resolution version of the image (and even specify the dpi if you want) and it will work:

Using a global warming level (GWL) lens to explore climate impacts leads to key insights but many pitfalls must be recognized and avoided. Discussion of key results in our new paper:

The European Union just came out with an official report:
REAL-WORLD emissions versus the new WLTP cycle.

The results are
*UNBELIEVABLE!!*

PHEVs emit on average
THREE AND A HALF TIMES MORE
than the official test claims!

Sometimes, people try to argue that the global warming signal is an artifact of the bias adjustments & other quality control processes applied to weather station data.

That is easily shown to be untrue. The net effect of the adjustments on the global land average is very small.

Our sensitivity analysis of soil-based approaches to quantify carbon dioxide removal from enhanced rock weathering is published. In short, they should be useful in most regions as long as you get your sampling protocols right & choose the right feedstock!

One of my main motivations for founding Our World in Data was to overcome the mad reality in academia that much of the most important research and data is locked away behind paywalls.

I wanted research and data to be a public good, accessible to *everyone*.

This is a fantastic and thoughtful overview by Prof. Stefan Rahmstorf 🌏 🦣--accessible to a broad audience--of science surrounding the , its role in global system, the (enormous) risks posed if it were to collapse, and discussion of the (still large) uncertainties involved.

This is just the latest example of using deadline rhetoric in the climate debate. You may remember the 'we have only 12 years' catchphrase following the release of IPCC SR15 in 2018. The problem is such rhetoric is both ineffective & self-defeating.

Carbon LinkedIn blew up yesterday over the SBTi board making a statement that could be interpreted to endorse offsetting instead of emissions reductions. Today the details surface. The board acted alone and did not consult the staff, the technical Council or the advisory groups.…

I seized the controls of The Spark, and explored the weird way that cleaner skies are unmasking additional warming — and also why that’s not a great reason to add back pollution (which would then effectively amount to a clunky form of geoengineering).

The fraction of carbon that stays in the atmosphere can be measured, & there seems to be a slight trend of more staying in the atmosphere.

We can estimate with data & models if that is due to the land or ocean, but it is hard to tell.

Why?
