As Richard says, the 'slippery slope' line is a tired agreement that gets rolled out every time.
There is no grey area with smoking - it is dangerous. As Steve Brine MP said in the debate, smoking must be one of the only products that, if you follow the instructions, it will kill you

Well done to House of Commons for voting for the Tobacco and Vapes Bill at Second Reading. Still lots of steps to get though before this can become law, so important to keep explaining why this is a once in a generation opportunity to protect young people from addiction & harm

We The King's Fund fully support the smokefree legislation coming before Parliament today. It’s good for health - will prevent future addiction & disease, with all the associated misery - & widely supported by the public.

Grim, but alas unsurprising.

Patient need in deprived areas is greater, but in the poorest areas of England is under-funded and under-doctored relative to the richest areas. Little wonder that access is harder, and people turn elsewhere

No 2 May election, but still interesting to look at progress toward government's 2019 manifesto health + care pledges.
Of the 14 commitments...
5 met
6 not been met
3 partially met or evidence is inconclusive

Any guesses which?

Tobacco Bill is a potential game-changer for the nation's health. Huge opportunity for UK to lead the world.
X-party support, but not a done deal yet. Expect counter-arguments about enforcement + illicit trade. Parliamentarians should not be deterred.

It’s easy to be cynical about how much health legislation actually influences the real world. But then stuff like this happens and it reminds me it is possible to make big steps forward in prevention if we are willing to be bold.

Poverty is taking a toll on the nation’s health.

This week's report from our member Joseph Rowntree Foundation with The King's Fund shows that the rise in deep poverty during the cost-of-living crisis is worsening health.
