in 1970, Lance Corporal Emilio De La Garza lost his life. During an encounter with the Viet Cong, the East Chicago native placed himself between a grenade blast and his squad, saving their lives. He was posthumously awarded a Medal of Honor.

in 1990, 18-year-old Kokomo native Ryan White died of complications from AIDS at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. He acquired the disease through contaminated hemophilia treatments and faced discrimination for his diagnosis. Over 1500 people attended his funeral.

in 1862, the Battle of Shiloh began near the Tennessee River in southeastern Tennessee. The 44th Indiana Volunteer Infantry earned the nickname the “Iron Forty-Four” as it engaged Confederates in some of the deadliest areas of the battlefield.

in 1945, Tuskegee Airmen of the 477th protested discrimination by trying to enter the white officers’ club at Freeman Field in Seymour. Over 100 Black officers were arrested. The Army eventually ordered the officers released.
