I have stayed out of debates about drug policy - not because I don’t care but because until recently I found it pretty sterile. Part of the sterility was seeing commentators completely miss the point like this : theglobeandmail.com/opinion/articl…

I’m not entirely sure what you mean by this. But if you’re saying humans are fallen creatures, then, yes I agree. If mankind were ruled by angels there would be no need for auxiliary precautions.

Happy to see the book launch for Jean-Sébastien (J-S) Rioux Death Followed Them Home. Which I recommend even if you can’t get a copy signed by the author. The sketch of the sequel looks great. Like any good Canadian thriller, part of it is set in haiti. Can’t wait.

Ian Brodie I met Brian several times for lunch at the Shore Club where he was kind enough to indulge my questions and to tell a few war stories.

He loved it, all of it. And he was great at it.

When academics talk to other academics about peer review, we are quite willing to discuss what it can and cannot accomplish. When others use the term, they too often assume something peer-reviewed is axiomatically true. But that’s not the purpose of the peer review process.

An excellent statement by Princeton's President Christopher Eisgruber, reiterating our university's robust free speech protections, and accurately explaining the purposes and importance of reasonable, viewpoint-neutral time, place, and manner regulations.

Very sad to hear of the passing of Brian Mersereau. Brian's bio reminds us of great government procurement that were executed well in the recent past, and whose fruits still protect us today. He was one of the wisest people in Ottawa and I learned a great deal from him.

We need to let everyone else know that a PhD and peer review doesn’t make you right. Or even a good person. Or necessarily even terribly smart.

It was wonderful to be part of this event with Taiwan in Canada coming to Calgary. Very happy to host our visitors from Ottawa and Taipei.

Happily, universities do not generally police private conversations. Students say all sorts of silly and sometimes offensive things. It's OK to point out what is silly and offensive. I don't think we want universities policing student speech though.

Now that I’ve aired my frustrations - thank you to Gary Vidal, MP for your service to Canadians and for Northern SK. You took a riding that desperately needed advocacy and you championed it with so much grace & effort. The party will have a big part missing without you.
