Adam Tooze is of course right to worry that any major adjustment in the global role of the US dollar is likely to be disruptive for the global financial system, but I think he, like others, grants too much agency to US control of the dollar.

National Security Education Programs are critical for language instruction of China experts. Only one university in the Western half of the country now has a government-funded intensive Chinese program. This is not in the interest of the United States.

I only just came across this wonderful pedagogical essay on 'Teaching Taiwan' from Lauren Collins published in Association for Asian Studies Education about Asia. Collins shares how she led a study abroad program to Taiwan in 2023 and interprets historical memory. asianstudies.org/publications/e…

And here we go. In my new book, To Run the World, I have a long discussion of China and Hungary. Seems like a random subject but it's not. In fact, it is essential for understanding China's growing global assertiveness.

Long-form Brad Setser is a rare treat, so you'd be foolish to miss out on this commanding overview of the evolution of Sino-American financial asymmetries and their geopolitical implications.

Another amazing biography on Chinese leaders coming out soon—this one on Xi Jinping’s father Xi Zhongxun who played an important role in the early history of the PRC and shepherding reforms. Looking forward to this long-awaited masterwork. Congratulations Joseph Torigian!

“What none of us have are governance rights against the trustees who really run the place. We enjoy various individual privileges and protections, but not the franchise.

Legal scholars and political scientists have a term for this sort of arrangement, too: liberal autocracy.”

Reading Wendy Cheng’s new book Island X helped me realize how important campus anti-Vietnam War protests were to later democracy movements in Taiwan as diasporic students were galvanized by activism in the US, and that we are in another historical moment in the present.

What is the difference between Hokkien, Minnan and Taiwanese? There is often some confusion and controversy about this. Simply put: Minnan 閩南 is an overarching category that comprises Hokkien, Teochew (, and Hainanese, but there is no consensus about its inclusion). 1/

🍌Our analysis on the 2024 Taiwanese Presidential Election on social media is now up on PNAS Nexus.
Key finding: Alternative candidates emerged via focus on 1) domestic policy, 2) skepticism toward foreign allies, 3) divergent frames of national identity.
