Today, on the 35th anniversary of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988, my office formally apologized for its past role in the deprivation of Japanese Americans’ civil liberties during WWII.
 
The suffering caused by these actions is incalculable and the moral injustice is undeniable.

On August 9, 1945, the US dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki. On this anniversary, we shall remember the past so as not to repeat it.

Today we honor the countless victims of the atomic bomb. As historian Naoko Wake once wrote, '[the] hibakusha's history did not end after 1945; it continues to this day, urging us to confront many unending questions.'
