“what you want most of all is intelligent praise. If you can’t have intelligent praise, you’ll take stupid praise. If you can’t have stupid praise, then the third-best thing is intelligent criticism. And, of course, the worst thing is stupid criticism.” nytimes.com/2024/04/02/boo…

Sam's right. Dawkins is just the latest to take this on in Europe, and the Trumpian version has a weird patina of Evangelicalism that can make it hard to recognize but it's structurally quite similar.

Yes. Being a teacher has more impact, and is more important, than any other role in education.

Doing 'policy work' doesn't mean you have more positive impact. Sometimes, it means you've done your part to make things worse.

These things move fast - damage is done quickly. A first response is not the hard, ASA. Even the lowly FSA was able to put out a statement already!

🧵 Thrilled to share our new study in Association for Psychological Science's flagship. We show talk of anti-Christian bias is a potent dog whistle that primes White Christians to perceive anti-White bias & is a socially palatable signal that politicians will fight for Whites. 1/ journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/09…

I have been rejected from lots of things, most notably every single full-time job I've ever applied for, except the one I currently have. Though since then I did once get a job offer for a job I did not apply for! Anyway all it takes is one and often it's just about fit.

Pew asked Americans how many of their close friends share their religious beliefs. Evangelicals are the only group where the majority say most/all their close friends share their beliefs. Part of that is group size, but also a subculture built around rigid us vs. them boundaries.

If the school quality standard deviation was 0, school assignment policies would be irrelevant. The fundamental causes of between school variation in quality are our systems for financing public ed and assigning principals and teachers to schools.
