Yes, Kurdistan Regional Government offers protection to Syrian and other refugees of Kurdish origin.
No, not all Iraqi displaced especially Ezidis will be able to return home now even if Da’esh is not in Sinjar anymore.

Major breakthrough thanks to UNHCR Iraq’s relentless advocacy
Government of Iraq - الحكومة العراقية Min of Education now agrees that refugee children be enrolled in public schools in Federal Iraq even if their parents do not have national residency documents as refugees
🤲
Access to education is for all
After heavy rains in Kurdistan, ايفان جابرو Evan Gabro’s Ministry of Displacement immediately sent a team to evaluate the damage & replace tents in Hassansham camps.
JCC_KRG & UNHCR Iraq joined forces with them.
As we always advocated, camps are never a dignified solution to displacement…

Goral: refugees are included in public services of Kurdistan Regional Government & Government of Iraq - الحكومة العراقية + economically self reliant + protected through residency + access asylum guaranteed
Success for UNHCR Iraq would be if we are not needed anymore!
Capacitating UNHCR Iraq to advance refugee inclusion in public services & policies through development approaches - rather than humanitarian ones
Kurdistan Regional Government is a great partner as they see eye to eye with us on giving refugees access to their services on par with their population
Despite teachers’ strike due to delayed payments of salaries, Director of Education in Sulaymaniyah lead the inclusion of Iranian, Syrian & Turkish refugee kids & qualified refugee teachers in public schools.
To support, UNHCR Iraq rehabilitated 13 classrooms & more to come.
Thanked Sulaymaniyah Governor for having supported with ايفان جابرو Evan Gabro the returns of Iraqi displaced families to Diyala last year & for exploring local options for those who cannot return home yet.
Helping refugees to fend for themselves further is also a common priority.
Most countries accept refugee kids in their public schools.
⭐️ good!
Kurdistan Regional Government Min of Education hired qualified refugee teachers.
🌟 much better!
Refugee teachers get a job to teach refugee & local students alike, thus reinforcing social cohesion.
.UNHCR Iraq joins the sentiment of pride of Kurdistan Regional Government Rêber Ahmed in upholding refugees’ rights:
- to access public services
- asylum through residency permits
- not to be forcibly returned home
Comforting to hear a Min of Interior refer to human rights.

What does it mean to be a refugee teacher?
Listen to Parween speaking at the #RefugeeForum today.
One often speaks about refugee kids in public schools.
But what about refugee teachers?
Kurdistan Regional Government is reimagining education.
Will other countries follow?
