@phenomenoeme It seems there is a great deal of tension in writers around this issue. These are folks who probably don't really think about or engage with the questions of how they write what 'they' 'write,' or what any of that means, and feel threatened by things they haven't investigated.

Lillian-Yvonne Bertram (along with many other poets) has been doing innovative work in algorithmic composition for some time. Just as there's a difference between a cento and plagiarism, there's a difference between Bertram's work and machine-faked authorship.

We in fact NEED people who have spent years thinking deeply about the interactions between technology, race, and poetry to write poems using LLMs, and there are few people I trust more to do this work than Lillian-Yvonne Bertram. Congrats to LBY and all the finalists!

Also not ashamed to admit that I’ve been using Twitter for SIXTEEN YEARS now (although not so much in recent years; see Mastodon), and some aspects of threading still confuse the heck out of me... 😅🫣🤔
