Daily reminder that around 20% of the nearly 30k people in Illinois’ prisons are elderly.

We have no mechanism for mid-sentence review, so people are held in prison years and years longer than necessary for public safety. 🫠

IPP is thrilled to welcome home our client, Tonya “Bam” Woods, who was released today after over 38 years in prison. Bam was represented by pro bono attorney Tara Goodarzi who worked hand-in-hand with Bam to tell the true story of her life and her humanity. (1/5)

If charged w/ a crime anywhere in IL, you should be defended by a zealous advocate with resources (office, computer, Westlaw, paralegal, investigator, social worker, training, admin) to do the job properly. Not a lawyer starved of resources who can't speak up w/o getting fired.

We can't wait on the prison system for help, we rely on our built community. Ralph needs a cane, we find one; Ben can't hardly see, we read the paper to him; Old Man Lou wet his bed, we wash his sheets. That's what a community does, help each other, not waiting on outside rescue

Stanley Howard toasting Renaldo Hudson for his 60th birthday. They met on Illinois’ death row. Now, both such shining glorious people. I’m not crying, everyone is crying.
