I want people-friendly villages, towns and cities. Have spent lots of time in Seville, want Edinburgh to look much more like it.

New study finds that exurban residents drive more and walk less than those living closer to central cities -- and they have higher rates of heart disease, diabetes, and other cardio risks.

Land use, transportation, and health are inextricably linked.

France’s vélorution is much bigger than just the capital.

It’s happening in every corner of the country, with commitment at all levels of government to fund and build high-quality cycling networks.

And in cities like Lyon, progress is moving at a dizzying and unstoppable pace.

Update on this - she got back on her bike today and cycled to work along CCWEL.

Safe cycle infrastructure matters.

Interesting from Groningen 👇

🚲🚍🚄 Big park+ride stations with day-rental bikes, all positioned on outskirts of the city on the regional cycle network.

Journeys by bus, train, bike - to and from nearby commuter towns - all interlinked and made as easy as possible.

Rail: the ultimate example of crazy train ticketing?
Edinburgh-London on Saturday morning.
LNER says the cheapest ticket to King's Cross is £200.
Avanti West Coast has a £125 fare.
Yet from Haymarket, 1 mile away, you pay just £91 on either line to London.

Would be great if we applied the same level of design, testing, scrutiny and regulation used for our children's car seats to the bike lanes they ride to school in.

Interesting to see another colour for cycle tracks in Edinburgh (mostly red chips on CCWEL/Leith Walk, no colour on parts of CCWEL at historic areas, tan colour here) on same day Living Streets research says this…

In Paris, the number of people biking *doubled* in a single year (Oct 2022-Oct 2023).

It's not magic -- it's what happens when a city makes biking easy and safe.

TL;DR? A 🧵
Unless they’re working in dense cities, home care workers usually rely on their cars to visit their elderly, unwell or Disabled clients, and travelling between visits each day can clock up over 1,000 miles a month. Most are in the 95th percentile of UK drivers

Bizarre and unintuitive.

Key message for designers #5 from Cycling by Design clearly not taken into account. Compare and contrast to Dutch examples in The Ranty Highwayman ‘s feed over the last few days - night and day.
