Happy 32nd birthday to our friend and colleague Evan Gershkovich, who has now been in prison in Russia awaiting trail on absurd charges of espionage for nearly 7 months. We continue to call for his release. Evan, we miss you.

A great weekend read here from my colleague Isobel Cockerell reporting on the TikTok-fueled exodus of thousands of migrants from Albania

With new history textbook, Moscow tightens its control of thought at home. There is room only for one, highly distorted, point of view.

In my latest piece for Coda Story, I spoke to Общество Мемориал about the frightening historic rhymes in Russia's new high school history textbooks: “This is the same rhetoric that was used in the 1930s ahead of the invasion of Poland, exactly the same”

Great piece from Katia Patin on the new Russian ‘history’ textbooks. Coda Story publish some excellent content on historical memory & memory politics in Europe. Included comments from me and Memorial’s Alexey Markarov

Belarusians in more than 20 cities & countries, from the US & Canada to Poland, Israel & Georgia, rallied on the third anniversary of the beginning of the Belarusian revolution. I am grateful to our resilient diaspora for doing what they can for . This is how unity looks.

Wow! The Associated Press now officially recommends avoiding the term “former Soviet republic.” This is a good example of how the invasion of Ukraine is forcing the international media to rethink its Russia-centric coverage of the wider region

The essence of it: if you hold up a blank piece of paper in Russia you get arrested. But if you mount an armed mutiny, shooting down 7 attack aircraft, you get to go to Belarus to fight another day.
