Yeah, yeah, I know it's probably nothing new for most of you. But this Californian's 1st #winter in New England is full of new experiences, especially after living several decades in Hawaii.

Identifying and taking an amazing array of samples in the lab this week from fossil #Hawaiian #CoralReefs cored on #IODP #exp389 . These will be used for a variety of science applications. Stickers correspond to different use cases. After sampling, foam forms sit in empty spaces.

Fresh & dense picrite, fresh aphyric 'a'a, basalts with infilled vesicles, and those with sharp flow contacts: #hawaiian lavas cored well below modern sea level on #IODP #exp389 are showing a surprising range of #volcanic textures... all in the first site we've examined thus far.

1st day sampling #HawaiianDrownedReefs #IODP #exp389 rock cores. Loads of corals, but also a lovely clinkery 'a'a lava that I sampled for chemistry & dating. These undersea lavas will tell an unexpected yet important volcanic history story (see expedition389.wordpress.com/2023/09/27/bla…)

All the cores we collected 3 months ago on the first leg of #IODP #exp389 lined up together at the Bremen (Germany) repository. Cores will be split, imaged, described in detail, and sampled starting tomorrow. It's an amazing #climatearchive

63 days at sea on #IODP #exp389 : I worked with some incredible people, saw 63 amazing sunrises, ate a ton of junk food, worked out of a shipping container in full PPE, and collected some amazing rock cores! On my first day off the ship I want to find a vegetable and a bathtub.

It's done. Who would have thought before #IODP #exp389 that the 2nd commonest rock type recovered from 35 cores of past #coralreefs around #Hawaii Island would be volcanic rock?! 🥳

To be fair, the 2nd plot shows the more expected outcome, lumping carbonate material together.

I call this one 'Moondance', inspired by the classic Van Morrison song of the same name. It was a calm, balmy, hot, late October night, offshore Hawaii, uh, 2 days ago, when I looked off the starboard side of the ship I was on and saw this magical view. I hope you enjoy it too 😊

Is an eruption in the days or weeks ahead imminent? Kīlauea volcano is not erupting, but USGS-HVO says the unrest SSW of the summit continues. Renewed seismicity beneath the caldera extending SW along the trend of Dec. 1974 eruption vents, & high inflation signal magma at depth.

Today on #exp389 #HawaiianDrownedReefs we were visited after sunrise by the Hawaiian god Kanaloa, in the form of whales. He is the ocean deity (among other roles). Whales are seen as a guide, which bodes well for our research. I didn't get a photo, so please settle for this 🤓

Living in #Hawaii you see a lot, I mean a lot, of rainbows. But few are as spectacular as this. Complete double rainbow, in front of the horizon

Spectacular views of #MaunaKea #volcano this morning, with just the summit bathed in very early morning sunlight. On the opposite side of the ship I am on there was a dramatic #Hawaiian sunrise.

One of my roles in #IODP #exp389 about #HawaiianDrownedReefs is determining the ages of fossil corals. Often specimens that are 10s or 100s of thousands of years old look pretty beat up, ravaged by post-depositional processes. But yesterday we cored these beauties from MIS7!

Absolutely beautiful paleo coral reef core sections, 50m thick, with excellent recovery at our last site off the NE Coast of #Hawaii Island. #exp389 #DrownedHawaiianReefs

Following up yesterday's #Kilauea unrest post, enhanced seismicity continues in the upper SW rift zone (last erupted in 1974 & a possible magma intrusion in 2015). USGS reports recent quakes extend from the caldera 'along the trend of December 1974 vents'. See also pics alt text
