My latest HDR eclipse image shows some coronal loops and streamers. It combines 9 exposures, 1/125s to 1/5000 s at ISO 100. Takahashi TSA 120, 0.7x focal reducer, Sony Alpha 7 III modified for h-alpha, and a big hole in the clouds! Processed with Photoshop.

Nuclear binding energy this week, time for marshmallows + frosting/icing demo.

Make a BIG nucleus with a bag of pink/white marshmallows (2 colours!) + 1 tub frosting.

Pull it apart, make two smaller nuclei and voila! left over frosting! mass deficit!

Here's a closeup of the bright prominence that many people reported seeing with their naked eye during the eclipse. This was captured using two telescopes- at 2000mm and at 3650mm.

Last night's target was NGC 3718. It is a galaxy warped into an S shape, possibly by the gravitational influence of its companion, spiral galaxy NGC 3729. NGC 3718 is 52 MLY away. Just below it is Hickson Compact Group 56. This galaxy group is about 425 million light years away!

The students used the PASCO scientific wireless conductivity sensor to help test whether the water samples were safe to drink. The meter was used in a range of tests and quickly identified seawater, brackish water, and tap water by their conductivity levels.
