Alberta NDP members who want rent control back in the policy book will have to work to get it there. A government bill while in power is likely to encounter much more resistance than a symbolic, guaranteed-not-to-pass private bill from the opposition benches. (And did, in 2016.)

As our writer Jim Storrie noted when Irwin's bill was first announced, rent control was an Alberta NDP position in the early 2000s, and was still getting some advocacy as recently as 2014. But when the ANDP won in 2015, that commitment disappeared. theprogressreport.ca/is_the_alberta…

There was never any doubt that the Smith administration was going to shut down Janis Irwin's rent control proposal.

The real question is whether the Alberta NDP will continue to advocate for rent control if and when they regain power. They've abandoned it before.
