I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: There is no direct causal link between mental health problems and murdering women. I have had plenty of mental health problems & I have managed to get through my entire adult life without murdering a single woman or child. Not even one!

Because academics can never be allowed the conceit of expertise. Because even the most exceptional are still 'in development' and must justify their jobs. Because UK is fucking intolerable.

Precarity is everyone's problem: 'to the neoliberal university, a tenured professor is just some jerk taking up a valuable adjunct line'.

Also: if people in positions of power within disciplines and HE can't/won't/don't know how to push for change, they should stand aside.

“Are Angela Rayner's troubles a sign of what's to come for Labour?” asks Laura Kuenssberg.

If she means the incessant hounding of the right-wing press, who ignore the constant stench of corruption emanating from the Tories, then the answer is yes.

Brilliant from Dr Abs Stannard Ashley - neurodivergence being used as a means of discrediting trans people.

A pattern we’ve seen in history with hysteria - oh no, wait, we’re employing EUPD/BPD in AFAB folk. Spot the différrance…

I don’t think I have ever seen a disaster community held in deliberate limbo for so long. Everything is “held” - the report, the tower, the criminal charges. Utterly shaming. Justice delayed is justice denied.

I took out a subscription to Butcher's Dog Publishing today. Its amazing editor, the poet Jo Clement Dr Jo Clement, deserves the respect of all writers and readers. The magazine is magnificent and deserves our support.

How are magazines meant to survive? I know many of us can't afford to subscribe to the magazines that underpin our literary ecosystem as much as we value them, but if you can, do. Right now, I can, so I'm following David Morley FRSL's lead and subscribing to Butcher's Dog Publishing.

Another day, another tale of management woe, and the failure of Tory HE policies. Solidarity with staff Goldsmiths, University of London theguardian.com/education/2024…

Uncharacteristically good Guardian HE piece on the current crisis from @[email protected] about Goldsmiths - terrible policy, xenophobia, and clunky management.

This case isn't a canary, things have been unravelling for a long time, but it is illustrative.

The idea that you can address cultural issues in an organisation through an unending cavalcade of HR-led, tick-box mandatory training is one of the many reasons why universities are quite often difficult places to work and/or study.

'Several [men] said that they actively didn’t respond to emails, or acted in an exaggerated disorganised manner. This meant they were assigned fewer tasks, but were also less frequently asked, and thus got away without doing service.” Le big sigh... kifinfo.no/en/2024/03/wom…
