This is just going to keep spreading because what is happening in Gaza and the West Bank is intolerable to most young people. Administrators and politicians can keep trying to shut it down but this is where public opinion is heading.

It's incredibly irresponsible for any university to call the cops on their students, but Columbia University in particular had so many options to handle this better. It's budget last year was $5.9 *b*illion. Deciding to call the NYPD is a political act, not a logical one.

Protest is not meant to be comfortable. You’re not meant to like protests, you’re not meant to find them convenient. It’s supposed to be uncomfortable—so uncomfortable that it forces the powers that be to listen and change.

I would hope that Columbia Faculty see their admin arresting their own students for peaceful protest as a red line. These students are in our care. Our primary responsibility as academics is to nurture their minds and protect them from oppression. Faculty must walk out now.

Columbia Professor Rebecca Jordan-Young: 'The faculty who are supporting the students do not all agree on the issue of Israel and Palestine...[but] we are astonished and disgusted with the way the university has cracked down on the students.'

Columbia faculty should be demanding the resignation of their university's president. Feeling 'disturbed' by her invitation to police to arrest students is inadequate; we need action in solidarity with students now to protect universities everywhere from such authoritarian acts.
