The fact that anyone would try to trademark “chili crunch” is doing so in very poor taste but the fact that an AAPI led company with a Japanese name headed by a Korean American is trying to trademark a common use for a Chinese condiment is both disappointing and disorienting.

A trademark law paper I’m never going to write is about the consumer perception of trademarks only recognized (but widely recognized) w/in specific ethnic groups. Pocky, Grupo Gigante, 99 Ranch, Yakult.

It would also explain why “chili crunch” as a Momofuku TM is ridiculous:

Momofuku trademarking chili crunch shows that having the approval of your community doesn’t matter if all you want to do is win.

He didn’t want to be the best. He doesn’t want to be respected by AAPI. He wants to be the who white suburbanites reach for when they’re at Erewhon.

Puffins in flight, close to Sumburgh Head. They’re not on the cliffs yet, but it won’t be long. We’ve seen several Puffins whizz by the Observatory as they edge their way closer to shore.

Beef Noodles 牛肉麵 (Niúròu miàn) in Taiwan are one of its most famous dishes. It was created by KMT military veterans in Taiwan who came from Sichuan which has a similar dish but the Taiwanese version is less spicy.
