Just so everyone is clear, the Governor of Texas announces he ordered the protestors at the public university arrested because he is discriminating against their viewpoint, and the police confirm they acted at his instance.

It's fucking unconscionable for a linguist to wilfully convolute the concept of 'peaceful protest' as university adminstrators are siccing the NYPD on undergrads.

The supposed campus free speech crisis pushed by outlets like The Atlantic and NY Mag was always about suppressing free speech in the name of free speech. It’s textbook reactionary thought masked as liberalism, and it’s journalistic malpractice that this isn’t conventional wisdom

New statement from Columbia student protestors:
'We are frustrated by media distractions focusing on inflammatory individuals who do not represent us…Our members have been misidentified by a politically motivated mob.'

'We firmly reject any form of hate or bigotry…'

After the Atlantic magazine and the New York Times spent the last 10 years lecturing us on how college kids, who hold almost no power, are a grave threat to freedom of speech. Of course it was always the very powerful administrators and donors who were the real threat.

Protest is not meant to be comfortable. You’re not meant to like protests, you’re not meant to find them convenient. It’s supposed to be uncomfortable—so uncomfortable that it forces the powers that be to listen and change.

We’ve seen this play before. It does not end well.

You cannot placate the far right by offering sacrifices (see Republican primaries).
It just gives them a head start on the rest of their agenda.

And in the process UT Austin has alienated true supporters of academic freedom.

Nothing to see here folks, just a sitting US Senator advocating potentially lethal violence against protestors.

HOA presidents everywhere are overcome by an irresistible urge to slap someone, anyone, with a notice of violation

Media Matters has won its lawsuit against Texas AG Ken Paxton.

Paxton (at Elon Musk’s encouragement) launched an investigation into Media Matters.

We sued asking court to bar him from proceeding. We were just granted our injunction.

Big win for us and free speech!
