I visited the Gaza solidarity camp at Columbia yesterday and wanted to share a few
very brief observations.

First, it's one of the most highly organised student protests I've ever seen. They have media and de-escalation training, a nutzone to protest students with allergies.

They killed Refaat Alareer Refaat in Gaza 🇵🇸’ daughter, the one to whom the poem “If I must die” was dedicated to. His entire bloodline being wiped out. This is genocide. May we all fly kites in their honor, reaching the heavens. 🪁

Doesn't know anything about the country he's voted to be considered permanently safe by parliamentary fiat.

A UCL alum and Palestinian professor and writer, Dr Refaat Alareer, was assassinated last year. The uni has yet to acknowledge it, despite student pressure, vigils, & attempts to name the student centre after him. But this is what the renowned Institute of Education decides to do

This isn't Gaza. It is the West Bank. Killing, destruction, colonial land grab and ethnic cleansing have all increased since October 7th while the world has been focussed on Gaza. Tell me again that it's all about removing Hamas.

When I first joined Trinity I helped bring together a cohort of Palestinian partners under an Erasmus scheme.

One of those partners was the Islamic University Gaza.

In 2024, the university no longer exists.

This is why we speak up and speak out.

I just returned from #Gaza for Medical Aid for Palestinians.
The scale of the suffering and humanitarian catastrophe inflicted by Israel is vast and horrific.
What is being done to the Palestinians of Gaza is a disaster for humanity.
History will judge all who are complicit.

My God, just layers & layers of unfathomable cruelty.

I have not been able to fathom the pure, pure evil of this. How we treat prisoners is the most accurate mirror of how we treat the most vulnerable, at a basic human level, this is beyond monstrous.
Also, if Israel gets away with this, every single last government will follow.

A Gazan woman told me last night that we have to plan for building schools as soon as we are able to. I hope educators the world over will support Palestinians in this rebuilding.
