1. Cincinnati Library: replaced by a parking garage

When the Metropolitan Opera Association moved to a new venue, rather than risk competition from a new company buying the Old Met, they handed it to developers. It was demolished for bland commercial property to be built.

5. Garrick Theater, Chicago (1891 - 1961)

A wonderfully ornate theater inside what was a landmark of early modern architecture (by Louis Sullivan). Despite considerable protest, it was demolished for a parking garage.

The library's collection was destroyed by religious zealots in 391/2 AD - not by Caesar as is commonly held.

The circumference of the Earth, the Heliocentric system, atomic theory, and thousands of other concepts and proofs, were not re-discovered until the 15th Century. >>

It is estimated that only about 1% of the volumes contained in the Alexandrine collection have been recovered. These include, for example, Euclid's 'Elements,' and Ptolemy's 'Almagest.'
