Just me taking photos of lovely comments about me on student module evaluation forms to get me through job applications (and then humble bragging about it on twitter…)

I am feeling particularly glum about my career prospects this week. Hopefully getting back in the classroom tomorrow will brighten my mood.

If a Rwanda flight does take off…

Your bills will still be as expensive

Your wait for a GP/hospital bed will still be as long

Your court date will still be as delayed

Your taxes will still be as high

…but we will all be more more morally & financially bankrupt as a nation

The Rwanda bill has passed. What an evil, heartless country we are. Shame on the Tories, the Daily Mail, the bigots, the racists. You are the worst of us and I despise you with every inch of my body and soul.

Does anyone have a very high resolution image of this illumination from BL Harley 4418 that they would be willing to send me for my book cover? The BL can't access it but I can still pay them for permission to use it (I'm not trying to do any crimes!).

My annual commitment to die on this hill:
A holiday in the UK is a holiday.
A staycation is staying in your home and doing nice day trips etc.
Always feels like a weird form of snobbery to say it's only a real holiday if it's abroad.

The winner 2023-2024 Society for Medieval Feminist Scholarship Graduate Essay Competition is Dr. Basil Arnould Price!

His essay, “Bad Trans* Feelings in Bárðar saga Snæfellsáss,' argues for a non-sexological approach to premodern trans* studies by looking at ordinary negative affects. ✨

I'm going to a conference in a few weeks called 'Glocalism in the Age of the Sail' (shout out CMRC Southampton) but I can't decide if I like or loathe the word 'glocalism'.

I don't know how to explain to you that the humanities are essential to society. It's genuinely disheartening to see them consistently devalued and the valuable work of scholars be publicly ridiculed

I'm having an exciting week. I received page proofs for my upcoming article in Studies in Philology, and Lauren Sisson and I have submitted the manuscript of our edited collection Motherhood in the Medieval World to Brepols!

Infuriates me to witness an expensively and privately-educated journalist decry AHRC grants as money 'stolen from the working class' when such grants are one of the sole routes for a minority of working-class people to competitively enter humanities academia.

Parenting rite of passage: Wren (12) isn't talking to me because I won't let her watch Hazbin Hotel. Proper evil glares and door slamming. Welcome to parenting a (nearly) teen...

This is 100% true. Victorian medievalism is really fascinating in its own right, but you can’t take it at face value. It’s basically a lot of wealthy men LARPing chivalry because they’re freaked out by the Industrial Revolution
