Every year on 4 June, I think of this train I took from Shanghai to Beijing in May 1989, crammed with brave, earnest students desperate to join the protests in Tiananmen Square. The ideals of freedom and democracy they peacefully fought for will never die.

In Chengdu, students from the Sichuan Conservatory of Music shout slogans from the May 4th Movement, calling for freedom and progress. The last time I heard Chinese students shout these slogans was in Tiananmen Square, 1989. Their bravery is China’s hope.
